Urban Meyer is a smart man. After taking a beating from pundits for years who felt he didn’t disciplined his constantly arrested Florida gator players enough, Meyer has adopted a new approach at Ohio State.
According to Adam Rittenberg of ESPN.com, Meyer has revoked the scholarships of tight end Jake Stoneburner and offensive tackle Jack Mewhort who were arrested a few weeks back for public drunkenness and pissing on a golf course.
Meyer stated that “They will have an opportunity to return to the team in good standing following the summer session.” Both players also will have the opportunity to earn their scholarships back.
Stoneburner and Mewhort will both take summer classes and will pay their own way during the summer sessions. They can work out at the team’s facility but not with their teammates during the summer.
In my opinion its a smart move by the new buckeye’s coach. Both players are projected starters this fall so their importance to the team is somewhat significant. They are not all American’s or game changers tho. If the two players get their act together, great they get their scholarships back and everyone can move on and focus. If they mess up again, it’s not such a significant loss that it would rock the core of a buckeyes team still in transition from the Jim Tressel era.
