Sammy Watkins shot at the Heisman Trophy may have ended before it even got started.
ESPN.com is reporting that coach Dabo Swinney has suspended the star wide receiver for the first 2 games of the season.
Watkins who was a First Team All American last season was arrested in May for possession of a controlled substance and simple possession of marijuana.
It was reported that Watkins had 2 prescriptions pills and a bag of marijuana on him.
Watkins will sit out a huge game against Auburn on Sept. 1 and Ball State on Sept. 8.
Dabo Swinney released a statement today.
“I told Sammy this past May that there would be a high end (number of games) and a low end, and it would be up to him as to the length of his suspension,” Swinney said in a statement. “He has done everything we have asked and then some, so the two-game suspension is the low end.”
Watkins released a statement of his own also.
“I accept this suspension.” ”I made a mistake and realized that when this first happened. One thing we learn in this program is that there are consequences for your actions. The entire summer has been a learning experience. I am ready to get past this and look forward to September 15 when I can return to game day in Death Valley.”
Watkins should return to the 82 catch, 1,219 yards, 12 touchdown guy he was when he returns from his suspension.
Lets just hope he got the message and doesn’t go down the path of self-destruction.
