Tyrann Mathieu is quietly resurrecting his reputation and moving up draft boards. Even though he’s getting anywhere from a 3rd to 5th round grade, don’t be shocked if a team reaches for the talented defensive back.
USA Today is reporting that Mathieu who had a significant drug problem at LSU, told one NFL assistant coach that “he didn’t know how many drug test he failed, he quit counting.”
During one visit, Mathieu was asked how many drug tests he failed before he was suspended in college.
According to an assistant coach for the team, Mathieu responded: “I quit counting at 10. I really don’t know.”
The coach, who spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to comment about the evaluation, doesn’t dump all of the blame on Mathieu. He points a finger at LSU.
“If he flunked 10 tests before they suspended him, it shows that he got no kind of help,” the coach said.
Mathieu for his small size and stature is a supremely talented player. He will come with a risk, and will need to be drafted by an organization that is strong from top to bottom.
The coach the leaked this information obviously wants Mathieu to drop to them, and at this point it’s irrelevant news for NFL personnel, because I would have to assume they knew all this post combine.
If his account of 10 or more failed test is true, Les Miles and LSU should be ashamed of themselves.Powered by Sidelines
