Browns Name Brandon Weeden Starting Quarterback

The Cleveland Browns selected Brandon Weeden in the first round knowing he would turn 29 before the first month of the season was over.

The Browns wasted no time in getting his era started.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that Cleveland head coach Pat Shurmur announced Weeden will be the Browns starting quarterback when the season starts on Sunday September 9th.

Coach Shurmur made it official by releasing a statement.

“Brandon is the starter and we’re moving forward.”

“I think that’s the important thing. I’m not looking back. We’re committed and we’re rolling. We anticipate he’s going to do a great job.”

Former starter Colt McCoy was none to pleased about the news he received and pulled no punches and voicing his displeasure.

“I would like to say that I haven’t taken any snaps in walk-through or in practice with the first group,” said McCoy, who wasn’t even declared the No. 2 quarterback by Shurmur. “I’ve come out here and made myself better with the reps I’ve got and I feel really good and really healthy and I look forward to some preseason games coming up pretty quick.”

“I thought coming in it would be a competition. But again I’ve come out here and competed my tail off and I’ve really worked hard to get better and improve and I know I have and I know our team has. So from that standpoint I am OK.”

I feel sorry for McCoy because he never got to work with a full complement of weapons.   Regardless of the little bit of success Peyton Hillis had, I wonder how McCoy would have fared with a back like Trent Richardson behind him.

Regardless the NFL is about wins and production and the Browns brass did not have time to figure out what semblance of talent would eventually work around McCoy.
