LaDainian Tomlinson is 100% sure he will be hanging up the cleats. NFL.com is reporting the San Diego Chargers will sign the sure-fire Hall Of Famer to a contract before he announces his retirement via a press conference with team president Dean Spanos.
Tomlinson who was often referred to by his initials L. T. was the fifth overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft.
He was selected to 5 pro bowls and was an NFL all pro 6 times. He currently ranks 5th all time in NFL rushing yardage, and 5th in NFL rushing attempts.
My first and probably fondest memory came in 1999 during his junior season at TCU when he gained 406 yards in the final game of the regular season against UTEP. That game and a senior season in which he rushed for 2,158 yards while winning the Doak Walker Award, sparked what has become a resurgence in Texas Christian University football. L.T. put TCU on the map.
Tomlinson started 141 games over nine seasons for the Chargers, rushing for 12,490 yards with 138 touchdowns and adding 530 receptions for 3,955 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Tomlinson is the Chargers’ all-time leader in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, ranks second in scoring (918 points) and is fifth on their all-time receptions list and 10th in receiving yards.
Many will point to Tomlinson coming up small in meaningful games, I choose to remember a great back who carried himself with grace and dignity on and off the field.
