The real Nigel Hayes finally showed up and Wisconsin pulled off the biggest upset of the NCAA tournament by knocking out defending national champion Villanova, 65-62, in the second round to reach the Sweet 16.
Wisconsin — which shouldn’t have been a No. 8 seed — were led by Nigel Hayes (19 points) and Bronson Koenig (17 points), who was in foul trouble down the stretch.
Nova was led by freshman Donte DiVincenzo who had 15 points in the loss.
Villanova, the top overall seed in the tournament, went 32-3 on the season, won a fourth consecutive Big East championship, and won Big East tournament title a week ago.
