After spending the past weekend completing his first rookie mini camp, Robert Griffin III can now look forward to his first opportunity to bond and grow with his veteran Redskins teammates.
The question now will be how head coach Mike Shanahan can continue to build a solid and consistent foundation around Griffin III.
The offensive line is the most questionable position around RG3 and also the weakest link. It is completely imperative that this group comes together rather quickly. Trent Williams and Jammal Brown must finally step and play like the first round studs many thought they were when drafted.
The Redskins receiving corp has the potential to be anything from solid to really good as a group. Santana Moss is 34 and coming off his worst season in years. Moss must make sure he comes to camp in great shape to ensure he even has a roster spot. A healthy and motivated Moss should pair with Pierre Garcon to be the starters. Both wideouts can beat press coverage and make big plays in the passing game. Leonard Hankerson and Josh Morgan will provide solid depth and push Santana Moss for that starting receiver spot.
I believe the x factor in this equation will be tight end Fred Davis. Davis has the potential to be the Redskins most explosive player. Coming off a season where he had 59 receptions for 796 yards and 5 touchdowns, Davis and RG3 should become really good friends. Fred Davis can become his biggest target and most valuable outlet. The return to form of oft injured tight end Chris Cooley can be gravy on top.
It will be interesting to see if Shanahan tries to find a serviceable veteran running back to shore up their running game, or if he will be content to stand pat with bruising running back Roy Helu and the speedy Evan Royster. The needle in the haystack will be rookie running back Alfred Morris out of Florida Atlantic. A good training camp could help distinguish himself from the group.
In my opinion early success for RG3 hinges solely on that leaky offensive line being solid and productive. RG3 can kill the league with a short roll out passing game that will allow him to put immense pressure on opposing defenses. His ability to apply pressure to the edge will open up holes for the outside running game.
Stay tuned Redskins fans time only time will tell.
