Well the race wasn’t as close as we all expected.
NFL.com is reporting that Dolphins rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill was named the starter by head coach Joe Philbin.
It is Philbin’s hope that Tannehill will be the starter for the duration of his time as head coach.
Tannehill was third on the depth after missing a couple of days practice as the final first round holdout.
Philbin gave a short statement after naming his new starter.
“It was a close competition, but in the end we feel that this is the best decision for our football team at the present time.”
“We like a lot of things about him,” Philbin said. “We think he’s very poised, we think he’s a mature individual, we don’t think it’s too big for him. We think he has a good grasp of the concepts we are utilizing on offense, both in the run game and the pass game.”
It really wasn’t a close competition at all. Even after arriving late Tannehill had the comfort of knowing the offensive system, and David Garrard going down with a knee injury.
Many skeptics thought the Dolphins reached when they selected him 8th overall.
Tannehill now gets the chance to prove everyone wrong.
