When the 2012 NFL Free Agency period starts on March 13, the first player Jerry Jones needs to call is former Titans corner back Cortland Finnegan. I’m sure there are many so-called experts who will downplay the importance or significance of Finnegan as a needed commodity. I on the other hand feel that Finnegan is a must have for this Cowboys defense.
The 2011 collection of Dallas defensive backs were absolutely soft and lacked any toughness. Terrence Newman will be 35 this season and is due to count $6 million against the cap. Newman in my opinion has regressed and should have been released. Orlando Scandrick in opinion can’t play. He is too small to be truly effective against big wide outs and just does a terrible job in the slot. He is an absolute liability in the red zone. Several Cowboy insiders feel Mike Jenkins played well this past season even tho he was often injured. Cortland Finnegan would become a Cowboys defensive leader automatically by default. Finnegan is a tough scrappy corner who is versatile enough to cover the wide and slot receivers. He will stick his nose completely into the run game while agitating the hell out of his opponent. The Dallas Cowboys are lacking so much as a defensive secondary, that Finnegan’s lack of size and self-control should not even be an issue for this regime.
Jerry Jones needs to do whatever he can to convince Finnegan that his star can shine brightest in Dallas.
